About Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI):
IHMRI is a not-for-profit organisation that assists health and medical researchers in the Illawarra Shoalhaven. We provide affiliated researchers with a range of services including assistance with grant writing, funding opportunities, promotion and technical support. We encourage collaboration between academics and clinicians to find solutions to our greatest health challenges such as cancer, dementia, mental illness and diabetes. Established in 2008, IHMRI helps our founding partners, the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), advance health and medical research in our region. For more information visit www.ihmri.org.au
IHMRI’s point of difference, as a health and medical research institute, is its regional context, community-centred focus and commitment to addressing health issues affecting our region and Australia as a whole. The Illawarra is increasingly socio-economically and multiculturally diverse, and because of this, we believe our region provides a snapshot of the health and wellbeing of Australia. This includes the high-incidence of chronic lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, age-related conditions such as dementia, and mental illnesses.
Parkinson’s Disease is now the 2nd most diagnosed neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s Disease. 37 Australians are diagnosed with the disease each day meaning one in every 308 people in Australia is living with Parkinson’s.
